CHAPTER TWENTY
AT MORNING BRIEFING, EMMA felt outside of her body, as if her inner self had departed and left an empty shell behind. She couldnât recall feeling so depressed in a long time.
She jumped as she realized Sowah was addressing her. âSorry, sir?â
âYou were miles away somewhere. I was asking where you are with the ICF people.â
âI had a meeting with Madam Gertrude to start enrolling in the Ambassador program.â
âHow did it go?â
âSheâs an extremist, boss,â Emma said with concern. âI got her to confess that sheâs okay with gay people being stoned or beaten to death.â
âSeriously?â Gideon said, aghast.
With deep distaste, Sowah blew out his breath. âInsanity,â he muttered. âIt raises the possibility that she and maybe someone else in that organization wouldnât have a problem butchering a Marcelo Tetteh to death.â
âExactly, sir.â
âKeep working on her. See if you can get her to confide in you and reveal more.â
âSure, boss.â
Sowah looked at Manu. âHow are you getting on?â
âIâm meeting Chief Nii Lante II this afternoon.â
Sowah nodded. âGood work. I feel like things are moving in the right direction.â
AS HE SAT at his desk to begin the dayâs work, he received a call from Detective Chief Inspector Boateng.
âMorning, Yemo,â Boateng said.
âHey, big DCI Boateng! Itâs been a while.â
âYes, I hope youâre well; but listen, Jojo was arrested last night. Iâm at the CID charge office where heâs being detained.â
âWhat?â
âHave you heard the news that Henrietta Blay, the trans female artist, has been murdered?â
âNo!?â
âShe was Jojoâs friend. When he went to visit her last night, he found her dead. The inspector on the scene arrested Jojo on suspicion of murder.â
âOh, God.â Sowah let out a small gasp. âHave they charged him?â
âI think they want to, but theyâre hoping heâll confess first.â
âAre you still at the CO?â
âYes.â
âTell him not to say another word to anyone until I get our company lawyer over there.â
âYes, I did tell him that, and Iâll let him know the lawyerâs on his way.â
âThank you.â
Sowah put in a call to Julius Heman-Ackah, who listened to Sowahâs account and said curtly, âOkay, this is Ghana Police nonsense. We must get Jojo out of there. Can you meet me at CID in an hour?â
SOWAH ARRIVED FIRST and joined Boateng to enter the CO. Officers and armed guards stood at the long L-shaped counter. Behind them, arrestees packed the two noisy jail cells beyond capacity.
âDo you see him?â Boateng asked.
âNo, I donât,â Sowah replied, worried.
âThe cell farthest from us.â
âOh, yes,â Sowah said with relief as he spotted Jojo pressed up against the bars. Sowah smiled, gave him a power salute, and signaled to him to hold on.
The door opened again and Julius Heman-Ackah walked in dressed in a fitted, navy-blue three-piece suit. In a resonant voice that seemed to emerge from the heart of his hefty, six-foot-two frame, he said good morning to Sowah and Boateng, both of whom heâd known for decades. He dispensed with pleasantries and got to the point. âHave you spoken to him?â he asked Sowah.
âI havenât, but DCI Boateng has.
